Facts of life: many thousands of people die every year due to
Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) strikes. Only few will survive, unless
proper help is offered in due time !
The heart... if it stops, life stops...
proper bloodcirculation is life-critical because supply/transport of
fresh oxygen is key to our metabolism ! Fortunately, our heart in
normal circumstantings does this all by itself, "automatically". However,
in some cases the heart simply stops (in which case CPR is needed and life saving
to keep the blood circulation going), and in other cases the heart can
switch to an other/wrong mode of operation in which the normal strong heart
muscle contractions are gone and replace by fast and very shallow
contractions which don't result in a blood pumping action (ventricular
fibrillations), which of course will be lethal as well if nothing is
done to stop these fibrillations and allow the heart to resume its
normal regime.
AED... what is it ? It's a portable/small electronic device
which automatically will analyse the victims heart behaviour and if
needed it will delivere a proper electric shock to a victim
and this shock attempts to stop or disrupt the victims heart's
abnormal and lethal chaotic electrical activity (typical ventricular
fibrillation). The goal is to give the heart the chance to
spontaneously restart the proper/normal effective rhythm which
allows for a normal blood circulation. The AED is computer controlled
and has voice synthesis to guide you through, so actually it's very
simply to use and (almost) foolproof...
The AED however cannot start a dead heart, only CPR might help in this case.
